Aus loco discussion mailing list
On a slightly different tack, while reading Neville Pollard's "The Story of
the Sydenham to Botany Railway" I came across a photo of the locos on the
first Sydney-Perth Through Freight service. They were
42102(#1)/42105(#1)/42107(#1). The caption with the photo reads :
"42102, 42105 and 42107 prepare to leave Cooks River with the inaugural
Sydney-Perth Through Freight service on Monday 12th January 1970. Due to a
union dispute in South Australia the train was routed through Melbourne
necessitating a bogie exchange." Photo by KT Groves.
The photo shows the 3 locos with the head board "BY RAIL across AUSTRALIA"
on the front, and a distinguished looking gentleman in a dark suit and
banded hat standing by the buffers. Off to the side stand a group of well
wishers and a cameraman. Barely visible because of the angle of the shot,
painted on the side of 42102 are some words "....? from? EAST to? WEST"
Was anyone there?
Best regards,
Rob
