Aus loco discussion mailing list
In reply to Johns comment, and qualifying I am not an authority or expert
in Hassler Speed Recorders, that yes vaguely in the dim recollections of
my memories their was a problem with said units being non operational
when units were taken offline. This is where I will happily defer to experts
as my memories are hazy, as I think the problem was confined to certain
Box Cabs ? (442/422/80) and may also have had something to do with
whether the unit leading was A or B end at the front. Also I do recollect
having seen a smashed speedo axle cover brought into shed for repair,
and I do recollect asking the foreman fitter whether the segmented copper
commutator was just that or a generator, and I'm reasonably sure I was
told it was a commutator, (Note: my curiosity for asking the question lay
in the fact that I originally trained as an electronics tech, and the output
of a generator is notoriously very non linear at low speed, hence the use
of radar on Super Series Locos, which are subject to their own
idio-syncrasies,
viz SRA laying ballast in concreted tunnels and millipedes on the lines
thru the Adelaide Hills causing loss of adhesion). I believe the term
generator
may have been used loosely to describe the units function of generating a
set number of pulses per revolution of the axle, power being supplied to the
Hassler and hence commutator from the primary 72V L.T. power circuit of
the loco. The Hassler units could not produce a reliable speedo reading
under 5kph if memory serves me correctly. I guess the next question on
everyones mind is how did one know what speed the train was doing if
you were driving a multiple consist unit, with the front unit off-line and a
non operational speedo? (totally against all the rules & regulations by the
way) Answer - You didn't!! Generally one used a watch, experience and
ones senses, remember 1Km in a minute = 60Kph. I hope this has shed
a little further light on the topic, and I hope someone a little more
qualified
than I can confirm or deny the technical aspects of the operation of said
Hassler Speed Recorders.
