...and inconveniently arrived on the Up Main at Picton this afternoon about
1440, in time to cause further delays to Train SS85, hauled by 3801,
waiting in the Up refuge for passage to Thirlmere, and SL64, Southern
Aurora + N cars, "top and tailed" by 4520 and 44211, waiting on the Down
main, for return to Liverpool. With all this happening, and hundreds of
people on the Up platform, did PW4 really have to grind to a complete stop
? :-)
The annual Thirlmere Steam Festival and open day was notable for good
crowds, and while overcast, at least it wasn't a deluge as has happened on
several previous years. As well as the push pull service with 4520/ 44211,
3801 ran two Picton shuttles plus the return service from Sydney, 2705 ran
the Buxton shuttles as usual, and public trike rides, originally proposed
to run from Buxton to Hilltop on the disused portion of the loopline, were
cut back to run to Balmoral due to last minute imposition of severe speed
restrictions.

Paul
