RE: [Ausloco] V/Line engines working in South Australia

There was certainly an instance of S317 working a special wineries tour
to the Barossa Valley in the late 80s (if I recall correctly!) - not
quite an instance of a goods working, which you seem to be after, but an
unusual working nonetheless.

Subject: [Ausloco] V/Line engines working in South Australia

Hi

I am trying to find instances of V/Line engines working in South
Australia
on branch lines in the 1980s. It seems to have been fairly common to
use
these locos, which would have otherwise been sitting idle at Mile End or
Dry
Creek, to run short trip trains in the Adelaide metro area.

But there are only a few occasions documented where V/Line locos made it
out
onto the branch lines north of Adelaide. In 1989, an N class hauled a
short
train of grain hoppers to test an outloader at the Roseworthy silos. In

1994, there was an instance of an X being used on the Barossa stone
train.
So it did happen, if only rarely. I am not sure whether there was a
system
of charges that might have made it too expensive for AN to use V/Line
units
this way. But at least during the grain season, it might have been an
attractive option.

Does anyone remember any other instances of this occurring ?

Cheers

Ben
