RE: [Ausloco] String quartet
The D meant 4 coupled axles. C meant 3 coupled axles, as in C38.

Chris.

Hi.
Pre 1924 classification for the "standard goods" was the T, TF and K
classes. In the 1924 renumbering they became the D50, D53 and D55 classes,
with the D prefix only being used to identify the class, not the individual
locomotives. Unlike diesels, when there were 100 or more members in the
class, the numbers rolled into the next series, i.e. The 101st member of the
D50 class was 5101, not 50101 as 48101 is with diesels. Preserved examples
of D50's are 5069(saturated) and 5132 (superheated) at Dorrigo, 5096
(saturated) at Thirlmere and 5112 (saturated) at Bathurst.
Ron Preston's book "Standards in Steam the 50 class" and his soon to be
released books on the D53 and D55 classes are good research material.
Trust this is of help
Tom.
