Re: [Ausloco] ex-ROD 2-8-0/Hartley Vale
Gday, There are 3 J&A Brown 12 class (ex ROD ) preserved in NSW. Casey Jones
has got 2 of them and the Richmond Vale preservation Society has got the
other one. The two at Dorrigo are more or less complete while the one at
Richmond Main Colliery has been pulled apart for an assesment for
restoration . Last time I saw this engine , a couple of years ago, the
boiler and cab had been removed and put to one side.
Lloyds Models in Canberra got a company called Branch Line Models to do a
white metal kit of a ROD as they were nicknamed in HO scale they were a
popular model so I do not know if there is any left.
Hartley Vale was a facing crossover between the up and down main with a
siding leading of the Up main this then turned into 2 roads ,the loading
road and the run round. there was also a short shunting neck to enable the
engines to run round with out fouling the mainline. The Colliery was a way
from the loading siding the coal being transported be road truck to a dump
where it was loaded into the trains by frontend loader. The siding was
originally controlled from a small portable building with a push button type
frame in it ,but later into the life of the siding it was remotly controlled
from Mt. Victoria signal box.
The method of working was ; you would get a little yellow indication on the
down home signal which would alow you entry into the siding, you would pul
the train into the loading siding watching out for spilt coal on the track.
Too much spilt coal on the rails would insulate your engines from the
current return( with Electric locos) and you would have to stop and hose the
coal down so the electricity could find its way back ( This only happened
once or twice ) . Then you stopped with the waggons in clear cut off from
the train and proceed via the runround to the other end, while the front end
loaders started to load the train then up the neck and back onto the train.
After a Continuity test on completion of loading it was set sail to
Mt.Victoria for the brakes to be done then to Rozelle.
Regards
Milo.
