[Ausloco] About South Australian Diesels

I am forwarding this message from Les Smith ( who by the way was
C.M.E at A.N. when it Ruled the Nullabor.) I will send Les
information on how to join Ausloco, and perhaps Administrators could
also make sure that he is able to post soonest. I have had some
enjoyable chats, and know Les has a lot to tell. Les could be just
the one to get this group firmly on topic.
What do you all think? :o)

Subject: 500 & 800's m.u.???

As a non-subscriber I just thought this may wet a few appetites.

Two 500's were set up to m.u. back to back and worked out of DRY
CRK.North for some years. They had an electric jumper.

The m.u. equipment was removed from the 800's way back in history. The
odd one may have survived with one end only. They spent their last
years out at Gillman etc as they had an axle problem.....slightly
bent and were not allowed to go for main-line gallops.Their engines
diedin the end.

The 930's of course had 68-74volt controls and m.u.'d with all ALCO
& EMD units.
We never got one out on the desert as Pt. Augusta crews would not
allow it. The 600's did get to work the Leigh Creek coalies and a 600
did do an Alice to Tarcoola to get a train home. An EL did work a
coalie too!

The 930's, 700's & the 600's suffered badly for many years due to
home-made parts and local modifications. We did get some going pretty
well in the end.
958 after o/haul went out with a fuel limit governor and other
parts "genuine" as well as a few mod's removed and did not make any
black-smoke.
The 700's all had bigger generators fitted ex Ham. Iron C628's and
"genuine" parts fitted etc.....two of the SIlverton units had
fire-walls added.
Some 600's were up-rated to 2000hp and the parts for one to go to
2200hp were in stock but they went missing in the shift to Dry Creek.
2200hp was the generator limit. Unfortunately other management levels
decreed some 600's go to MKA for conversion to "slugs" instead of
some written-off GM's.

I can tell a few more tales, like 600's on the I.P. down from Pt.
Augusta and the night we ran a single 830 on a half I.P.consist to
Pt.Augusta.Also why the 930's behaved like dogs on the Overland.

Regards,
Les Smith.
