Re: [Ausloco] Digest Number 102

Hi Ben:

I'd be interested in the answer to your questions as well.

Meanwhile, to speculate, the few pix I have seen of the SAR 500 class
suggest that it was not equipped for MU operation. I.e., there's no
evidence of jumper sockets (either EE or Pyle-National type), nor of the
usual array of air system hoses.

Most likely the SAR 500 had the by then customary EE air throttle control
system and 110 volt auxiliaries - as far as I can work out, it was standard
unless the customer ordered otherwise, and the only EE Australia exceptions
that I know of are the TGR Y class (9 notch EM, 110 V??) and the NZR Di (10
notch EM, 110 V)). So, had the 500s been MU-equipped, then they could
easily have been specified to be compatible with the SAR 800s, which also
had the standard EE air throttles. That said, I understand that some EE UK
installations of the EE 4 cylinder engine had 90 volt electrics, although
evidently these could be mated with EE 110 volt systems.

So, lot's of unknown variables!

I think that the 930s would have had the standard, AAR-type 8 notch EM, 74
volt control/MU system, not compatible with the air throttle EE system.

And the earlier SAR 900 Class EEs had 10 notch EM, 110 volt control/MU
systems, so it seems that they would not have been compatible with anything
else in the fleet!

Cheers,

Steve P.
