[Ausloco] 3900 Class Electric in coal traffic

Hello All,

A 3900 class loco, 3923, recently painted in corporate colours, was observed
in coal traffic today. It was 2nd unit behind 3501 on a loaded coalie
through Wycarbah (40km west of Rockhampton) at 1340. Mid-train units were
3627+3642.

It is not known whether this use is permanent, or merely temporary because
of a shortage of 33/3400 and 35/3600 locos. There is, or was, one electric
coalie running around with 2 at the front and one in the middle and 92
wagons.

3900 class locos (and 2800s) have been known to be used occasionally as
helpers out of Rockhampton when a loaded coalie fails on Windah bank. But
the last time they were used as "coal" locos was when they were new, back in
late 1988.

A rumour that has been around a while is that about half the current fleet
of 3900s will be placed into coal traffic (presumably after the 2800s take
over some of the freight and passenger services between Brisbane and
Rockhampton).

Cheers,

Bruce
