Hello
I enjoyed the article on the 700 class in the latest Railway Digest. I've
always thought the 700s looked a bit boxy and 'dumpy' compared to their 442
sisters, so I was intrigued by the comment that the major difference was the
wider bogie frames on the 700 vs the 442 to allow for gauge conversion. The
AN corporate paint scheme didn't help much either, I guess. Are there any
other differences between the 700 and 442 body which might account for the
different look ?
I also appreciated the photo on the facing page, showing some early colour
variations on ASR's stone hoppers. Thanks to Rail Digest for taking time
out to record an important bit of SA rail history.
Cheers
Ben
