Grain & Ballast at Wolseley S.A.

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Spent an enjoyable day yesterday, Monday, observing a ballast and empty
grain train, hauled by ASR's GM43, 847 and GM38 in the area of the Vic/S.A.
border on the Melbourne/Adelaide line.

The train discharged its load of ballast between Bordertown, S.A. and
Serviceton,Vic, before running through to Leeor Loop (the first crossing
loop on the Victorian side of the border) where the locos ran around the
train. It then returned to Wolseley (the first station on the S.A. side of
the border), where it dropped its load of emply grain hoppers and collected
a string of loaded ones, bound for Tailem Bend.

The train was to return to Callington, near Adelaide, to reload the ballast
wagons, for a return trip the next day.

The GM's and 830 locos made a good change from the Freight Victoria G class
locos that we commonly see through Dimboola, Vic.on grain and ballast
workings.

Other trains sighted for the day were G520 and G539 with six grain hoppers
being loaded at Serviceton, and west bound National Rail steel train, headed
by two NR's through Kaniva at about 19:00.
