'X' / 'XA' / 'Y' class could MU with each other but not with the 'Z' types.

Within the 'Z' types: 'Z' / 'ZA' would not readily MU with 'ZB' / 'ZC'. The Z/ZA required the fitting of an 'Independent Release Pipe' which is neither a difficult nor expensive task. The MU cable / pin number allocation would require alteration or special MU jumper cables made up. Again, not an expensive task and it was seriously considered in 1993 when AN's fortunes in Tasmania were at, arguably, an all-time low. It was felt that keeping the two groups apart was no longer a luxury that they could afford and calculated that such a change would save them at least one loco! Perhaps that's why it's never done....

I don't think there are any problems with a Y mu'ing with a Z, they are both EEs.
Do they both have the EP throttle arrangement?
In regard to boosters you don't need MU as the boosters aren't locos, they just have traction motors which are supplied from the master loco.

Chris.

I'm not sure of the mechanics of it, but what work would be needed to enable
a Y to mu with a Z ?

Cheers
