Alice Springs, 17-18/2

4AL7N hadn't arrived by 1900 last night; no semis were present to
receive containers (normally lining up after about 1700), so I assumed
it was cancelled (NEVER do that). However, it must have sneaked in
late, as NR120 had joined DL39 in the yard by 0620 this morning.
Loading had already commenced yesterday afternoon of wagons for the next
departure, Sunday morning's 1LA6N: looks as if it will be a big load by
the time it leaves.

NR39 is back for its second visit in quick time, on the head of the
Ghan: 16 carriages and three motorails (and possibly a flat or two).
Again, NR39 and DL39 are almost side by side.

Item on the TV news last night (several channels) said commencement on
the Alice Springs - Darwin line has been set back by at least two months
by the current flooding in the Territory, with an August - September
start now likely. Footage shown on two channels during the news was
green EL57 racing through the desert on the Ghan (I wish!). Stock
footage in NSW on these sorts of items is always a DL on the Ghan or IP.
The new East Arm Port in Darwin was officially opened yesterday; this
will be serviced directly by rail once the line is through.

"Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it."
