Some incidental evidence is contained in the article on the NSW 49
class in the Jul/Aug 1981 AMRM, in which some 49 class sported a silver
painted roof as a means of passive thermal control for crew comfort (as
opposed to active measures such as A/C).
The Silver City Comet also appears to have utilised the paintwork as a
means of passive thermal control. The original paintwork consisted of an
aluminium paste that had (supposed) reflective properties.
I realise it's not quite what you're looking to know, but
crew/passenger comfort is probably as important as keeping the prime
movers and equipment at an optimum temp.
