This may not be as silly as it sounds, as there was a rumour going around 
about 10 years ago or so of the feasibility of several N class being 
Standard gauged to run the Melbourne/Sydney expresses utilising their head 
end power. Also it was mooted that they may be able to be used on container 
trains where their head end capabilities would have enabled "live" 
refrigerated containers to be carried without the use of portable 
generators.
This all died a natural death but I don't recall any problem with the N 
class not being able to be Standard gauged as being the reason for this not 
to proceed.
Maybe Bob can comment on this aspect.
