Morning all,
Well I must have the record for delayed messages. My original posting
of Easter 1969 was sent on Monday 24th and it finally made a crash landing from
cyberspace onto the list yesterday Friday 28.4.00 !!!
When it didn't show up after a couple of days, I resent it on the 26th and
it arrived pretty much on time. The only trouble was it decided to repeat
the posting again all by itself 24 hours later !!! Anyway, we now have
three postings of the same subject.
Due to the possible delays in items being listed, my I suggest that
sightings/occurrences have the date and time that they actually occur as it is
becoming difficult to determine what "today" really is. For example, a
posting of EL64 at, say, Goulburn today could actually be a posting that was
sent two or three days ago. "Today" could actually be last Thursday
(by-the- way, today now is Saturday morning).
I'll now have a go at Looking Back - Easter 1969 Part 2.
I might point out here that the 60-class ran to Gosford bunker first,
either when working a train or running LE. They ran this way on nearly all
occasions and the only time that I saw a garrett run against this ruling was
when it was actually going right through to Sydney on transfer. All other
steam ran engine-first on both the up and down, being turned on the turntable at
Gosford (which couldn't accommodate the 60-class).
"We arrived back at Fassifern in the very small hours of 4.4.69 and we were
all very tired. This did affect our record of events, as sleep certainly
overtook our desire to record the full passing procession. Some of the
diesel workings during the day were missed during some of our spasmodic
'naps'. Needless-to-say, we did manage to record most, if not all of the
steam procession for the day.
My records show 6042 heading towards Gosford light engine at around 3am,
followed shortly afterwards by 6010 on a goods. My next recording was of
6015 at 6.30am, thundering up Fassifern with a down goods, followed a section
behind by 6022. CPH 17 was noted at 6.40am on an Up Toronto. The

From here we trained it back home. I haven't recorded what took us
back to Sydney, although I would suggest it was a 2-car diesel set and then a
Interurban Electric. I slept most of the way.
As mentioned before, I would suggest that I missed a number of trains
during the day, although I can pretty much guarantee all the steam workings were
covered. I certainly did not record the 2-car diesel workings.
We had many days like this back in those wonderful times - and I can
distinctly remembering getting annoyed at "just another set of double garretts"
!!!!
Just as an aside, after getting a wonderful crossing shot of 5377+6026 and
6035 in Easter 1969, I decided to check out Fassifern again 25 years later in
Easter 1994. It was all Double-deck Interurbans with very little freight
working (note the change in terminology). The cutting at the top of the
grade had been widened out and much had changed. Then, at almost the same
time as the above-mentioned cross 25 years earlier, along came a long freight
heading north hauled by electrics 8647+8629+8643+8613. Even 86 class
electrics on the main north have now been confined to the history books
!!!!
Regards,
Mark
