Mexico trip

Aus loco discussion mailing list

Good afternoon, all
Well, back from my trip to Melbourne yesterday and after reading 136
messages have finally found time to post this message.
Vey little was moving on Good Friday on the south and saw the following:
05.26 at Bargo NR14/NR103/NR74 on 6SP5
08.07 at Cullerin NR66/NR95/NR36 on 6WP2
At approx 8.40 caught up to6SP5 which was waiting for a crew change at Yass
(just missed 1WP2 which the outgoing crew advised had 3 NRs)
09.10 at Bowning NR101/NR47/NR58 on 3PS6 (had to chase this one back from
Goondah & pass local roadworks & watercart to verify locos).
10.10 at Cootamundra had 4201/44211 stabled as well as 8171, 4884/4869,
8255/8165/8167/8182, 4889/4862/48129/48107.
11.02 at Junee produced 8177, 4855/48158/4875/48123, 8110/8245 & 8253
whilst EL63/EL61 were shut down at loco.
13.50 at Albury saw N469/N453 arrive from Melb on pass.
14.30 at Wodonga produced X51 & Y169. (didn't know until this morning that
S313 was also there but hidden behind wagons attached to Y169- thanks Mark!)
16.20 at Benalla found GM36/T378 & T320 shut down in beautiful afternoon
sunshine.
I won't go into details of the next 2 days, suffice to say that I didn't see
any of my beloved Alcos.
But what the heck, the GMs more than made up for this! (No! Not having
"change of life", Danny)
Now, I have some questions for our Mexican bretheren!
Saw a second series T class at Seymour stabled next to S313. Any clues as to
its identity, please?
Also, out the back of Dynon Loco are 8 withdrawn Y class all in V/line
livery and all in the one line. The second unit from the western end was
Y108 whilst the eastern most unit was Y138. Can anybody please provide the
missing numbers in order?
And also at Dynon just under cover was one of the 2 G class wrecked at
Ararat. Any clues to which one it was, please.
Finally, saw a WCR B class work an up train from Warnambool around 19.25 on
Saturday 22/4. Would appreciate identity of this one as well.
I was amazed as to how open things were in Victoria, with no sign of the
"Cityrail" type of fences we have to put up with (the one behind my place
has at least 3 big holes in it, but not to my credit!).
I guess because it was a public holiday and nothing much was running, there
was no real need for additional security, but there were plenty of gunzels
at Dynon photographing the 38s, so I guess no-one was really looking
elsewhere when I visited.
I must say that I am beginning to like the little P class, in particular the
ones in V/line passenger livery (saw P15 @ Dynon & P11 @ Bacchus Marsh).
The trip back was uneventfull with the same locos being sighted shut down at
both Junee & Coota, but did get to see a few old Alcos at Junee roundhouse
viz 4403, 4472, 4498, 4807, 4820, 4503 & 1872 whilst the "guide" would not
let me sneak away to peer at 4816 & 3505 behind closed doors & broken
windows. Also present in the roundhouse were EL52, and GNR 381 & 373 (I
think). Plus of course, C503!
Anyway, good to be back home, but have got the bug to go back to Mexico for
another GM session!
Sorry, Paul Nicholson, Peter Kilburn & Darrell Gainey. I left my address
book with your details at home, so couldn't contact any of you guys.
Oh, yes, nearly forgot that I saw the parrallel running of R761/R711 and
3801/3830 between Glenrowan & Benalla, though this was not the intention of
the trip!
Whew!
Ivar
