35 years out of date!    I would suggest that you undertake a lot of reading of
such publications as "Railway Digest",  ARHS Bulletin", "Motive Power", "Railway
News", etc. etc.   In one way or another, they all cover the railway
preservation scene.   Time researching in the ARHS Archives at Redfern would be
good source to access old copies of these publications for reading.

Railmac Publications also published a booklet on NSW preserved locos, but it is
not about 20 years out of date.

There may also be other web pages that are more up to date,
