I'm not sure about the exact reason for a truck having its tail shaft
disconnected, but a trucks gear box is a little more complicated than a
traction motor, a traction motor has only two gears that are in constant
mesh.  I'm guessing that they are worried about the truck dropping into
gear while being towed, if this happened they'd be in a little trouble !!
