Aus loco discussion mailing list
Aus.loco'ers,
I can't help but step in to this thread, as someone who on a daily
basis observes the coming and goings of countrylink services to the XPT
centre in Sydney, a 40 minute allowance for cleaning and turnaround is
highly optimistic, even if the Armidale/Moree train did arrive on time
(which it often does not).
The Xplorer set, which goes to the XPT centre to pump the liquid/solid
waste from its tanks and fuel up has to be pathed through peak hour
traffic from Central to Eveleigh, then onto the down Illawarra, then
cross to the down Bankstown line tracks at Sydenham, then do its business
and return. Not do-able in 40 minutes.
If there were spare (or extra cars) available, it would perhaps be
better to run one of the three Canberra Xplorer services as a 5 or 6 car
consist, dividing at Goulburn into a Griffith and Canberra portion. As
for Broken Hill, more cars would be needed to run a connecting service
off the Central West XPT at Orange perhaps.
Enough of crystal ball gazing.... Back to the real locos,
I hear - I forget,
I see - I remember,
I do - I understand
