According to Ron Preston's book "The Green Diesels", the 41 class had a 120 volt DC control system and eight throttle notches. Quoting from the book 'In the closed position the engines ran at the idle speed of 680 RPM but no power was applied. When moved to Notch 1, power started to flow to the traction motors and the engine remained at the idle speed. Notches 2 to 8 gradually increased the speed and, hence, the power output of the engines that were operating.'
