Tasmania had problems in the early 1950's with an increase in level crossing altercations concurrent with introduction of the 'X' class diesels - their dark green paint work let made them hard to see against the vegetation. This led to the experiments with light coloured stripes and eventually, the adoption of the red colour scheme (Alan: it didn't become a livery until the late 1960's).
