Both the Coastal Pacific and Tranz Alpine carriages and Locos are owned by
Tranz Rail Limited or by the leasing company that TRL sold them to a few
years ago (sorry I can't immediately think of the name of the company).  It
is dependent on what locos are on the point as to if they are leased or not.
There is no set locos for these trains.  AFAIK all the carriages are owned
by TRL.  They are operated by Tranz Scenic which is the passenger group of
Tranz Rail.

Incidentally I was driving the Coastal Pacific recently and was at a place
called Goose Bay about 10 k south of Kaikoura where the rail runs right next
to the sea.  The bay was full of dolphins (several hundred or more) playing
in the surf right up to the beach.  I stopped the train so the 150 or so
passengers could get a good look and photos etc..  One of the things that
truly will make the journey memorable.....
