Looking back - Wallan, May 1990

Aus loco discussion mailing list

All,

In view of Melanie's wonderful recount of the trains and operations of the
TGR in the early 1970s, I thought that I might also throw my hat into the
ring with notes of railway operation around Victoria in the late 1980s and
1990.

In 1990 I was in my final year at RMIT for my Bachelor of Soc Sci in
Librarianship and I travelled around Victoria by rail to visit various
libraries for my thesis and other research projects.

Spencer Street - Wallan and return
Friday, 11 May 1990

At Spencer Street I noted the following trains:
- The "Intercapital Daylight" was in pfm 1 with cars
PHN.2633-NDS.2286-2285-ODS.2260-RS.1962-VFK.273-VFK.276-FHH.2218. Loco 8169
would attach shortly
- The 0654 to South Geelong on pfm 4 had N.472 with BN.23-35.BRN-36.ACN
departing on time
- The 0710 to Sunbury on pfm 8 had P.23 with a SH set of cars
- The 0704 to Seymour (which I boarded) on pfm 6 was Tulloch railcar DRC.42
which departed on time.

Wallan was reached at 0753 (1 minute early). Very cold and very foggy. Just
missed the morning rush of commuter trains from Seymour.

Trains through Wallan:
- Up SG freight with 8168 at 0802
- Up "Melbourne Express" roared through with G.524 and a lengthy (and
varied) consist at 0839
- Up "Goulburn Valley Limited" with X.44 with a D van and N set at 0851
- Dwn Albury pass with N.460 with D van and N set at 0851
- Up Albury pass with N.469-X.42 with D van, N set and Z set at 0932
- Dwn "Daylight" with 8169 at 0938
- Dwn Cobram pass with N.470 with N set and D van at 0954

I then boarded the Up Seymour pass with DRC.42 at 1023 arriving back at
Spencer Street at 11.03 (5 minutes early!)

Hope this is of interest.
