Adelaide H Type 355

This was the last Glenelg tram to leave the former City Depot in Angas Street in Adelaide. This tram was donated to the Museum by the STA in November 1986 and arrived at St Kilda in December 1987. On arrival at the Museum it was placed in storage for later restoration.

This was the third H type tram to arrive at the Museum. Two others, 360 and 362, had been at the Museum since late 1982 when the STA had sent them out on loan. However, under the loan agreement these two trams could be recalled at any time for service on the Glenelg line. The Museum's aim was to have at least one of each type of Adelaide tram in it's fleet, and this lead to the acuisition of 355.

In March 1995, 360 and 362 were both donated to the Museum, having never been recalled. This left the Museum in the exceptional position of owning all 3 H Type trams. It was decided that 360 would be restored to as near original condition as possible, while 362 would be left as an example of a Glenelg tram in it's later life and livery. No real decision was taken on the future of 355, so it remained at the rear of the storage shed.

(Skipping some history to be filled in later)

In 2001, a deal was struck between the Museum and Bendigo Tramways. The Museum would donate 355 to Bendigo where it would be restored for operations in that city. In exchange, Bendigo Tramways would supply the Museum with two fully equipped Brill 21E trucks. These trucks would be a major start in what is likely to be the Museum's next restoration project: a Bib & Bub coupled set of A Type trams.

This tram has now been despatched to Bendigo.

Here are some photos taken during the loading of 355 for it's journey to Bendigo. There are a number of excellent photos of the unloading in Bendigo on the Bendigo Tramways web site.
