Adelaide H1 Type 381

381 in the line up of trams in the new shed

When built in 1952/3, this was the largest, heaviest and most powerful single car in Australia. It had different operational characteristics to the rest of the fleet and was not popular with crews.

It was withdrawn from traffic in December 1957 and stored at Hackney Depot until June 1958 when it was transferred to City Depot. In May 1959 it was shifted to Maylads Perway Depot for storage.

In May 1965 it's bogies were deliverd to the Museum, followed by the car itself in August. Within a week of the opening of the Museum tramway, the silver tram was ready for it's first test. On 30 March 1974 it ran down the Museum line, under it's own power for the first time in 17 years. Upon it's return to the depot yard it provided an unexpected test for the Members - it derailed at the points entering the yard. Several hours were spent rerailing it. Three months later, after crew training and final adjustments, No 381 entered passenger traffic.

It is currently in storage in the North Tram Shed.
