Ballarat No 34

This car was built in Adelaide by Duncan and Fraser in 1917 for the Hawthorn Tramways Trust where it ran as No 31. Upon the formation of the MMTB in 1919 it became their P Class No 137. Between 1924 and 1926 the full width cross bench seating in the drop centre had an aisle cut through it, reducing the seating capacity from 52 to 44.

It was sold to the SEC and arrived at the Ballarat Depot on 22 January 1947. The car, as Ballarat No 34, operated in that city until the closure of the system on 19 September 1971. It was one of the last cars to operate on the Lydiard Street North route that evening.

The SEC donated Ballarat Nos 21 & 34 to the Museum, and both were on display at St Kilda the following week. Arriving in fully operational condition, it was one of the first trams used in Museum operations.

It has been kept operational, and has since been painted in the 1960s SEC livery.
