This car was originally Adelaide A Type No 10, which was built as part of Adelaide's inital tramcar fleet in 1909. It was one of three Adelaide A Type trams sold to the SEC for use in Ballarat in 1936. It was sold without a truck, so one was built for it in Ballarat. It was fitted with air brakes and renumbered 21.

In 1938 it's body was reconstructed for one man operation and the seating capacity was reduced to 32 passengers. It became the most powerful single truck car in Australia in 1945 when two 65hp General Electric 201 motors, driven with GE K36J controllers, were installed. Sometime later the car was fitted with dash canopy lighting to reduce the possibility of night collisions with motor traffic on the busy Ballarat highways.

It operated in Ballarat right up until 18 September 1971, the day before the closure of that system. The SEC donated Ballarat Nos 21 & 34 to the Museum, and both were on display at St Kilda the following week. Arriving in fully operational condition, it was one of the first trams used in Museum operations.

It has been kept operational in it's final Ballarat livery. 21 is currently in our Main Shed. We are planning to make it available for hire as a party tram.
